What is Myofascial Release?
Myofascial release (or MFR) is a soft tissue therapy for the treatment of skeletal muscle immobility and pain. This alternative medicine therapy aims to relax contracted muscles, improve blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulate the muscle’s ability to stretch.Muscle is wrapped by fascia – a thin, tough, elastic type of connective tissue that wraps and protects most structures within the human body. Soft tissues in the body can become restricted due to disease, overuse, trauma, infectious agents, or inactivity, often resulting in pain, muscle tension, and diminished blood flow. Although fascia and its corresponding muscles are the main targets of myofascial release, other tissue may be addressed as well. At Carol Kennedy Massage Therapy, Carol glides her hands along the tissue to determine if it is smooth and consistent in texture. If she hits a “bump” she stops to assess what prevents her from gliding smoothly. If it is a small area like a knot, she applies pressure to work it. For broader areas, like the whole of the low back, where the whole band of fascia is tight or stuck, Carol slowly works her hands through, warming the tissue and literally melting the fascia.
